Scalise: $4.7 Million for Law Enforcement in Southeast Louisiana

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is awarding $4,737,724 in grants to several law enforcement agencies in Southeast Louisiana.

“These grants will help our local law enforcement increase the number of police officers on the streets to better protect the public,” Scalise said. “I have tremendous respect for the brave work law enforcement officers perform every day to protect our communities, and I will always fight to ensure they have the tools they need to do their jobs effectively.”

The grants will provide 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for entry level officer positions over a three year period.  Police departments receiving the grants will then be required to retain the grant funded positions for a fourth year. 

Law enforcement agencies receiving funding in or around Louisiana’s First Congressional District are as follows.

Gretna Police Dept.                                          4 officers          $692,872
Kenner, City of                                                 8 officers          $1,263,336
New Orleans Police Dept.                                15 officers        $2,523,345
Village of Tangipahoa Police Dept.                    1 officer            $155,979
Dillard University Dept. of Public Safety            1 officer            $102,192
