ENERGY TOWN HALL MEETING IN MANDEVILLE

August 6, 2008

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today said he will be returning to Washington, D.C. Thursday to call on Speaker Pelosi to reconvene Congress instead of staying adjourned for a five-week vacation. House Republicans have been demonstrating a revolt on the House floor while the rest of Congress is on August recess. They are demanding House Leadership to reconvene and bring up a vote to address the nation’s energy crisis.

“I strongly opposed the adjournment resolution last week. The liberal leadership has turned their backs on the American people,” Scalise said. “People in Louisiana and across the country are cancelling their summer vacations because the price of gas is too high, yet the liberal leadership in Congress decided to take a five-week vacation rather than address the crisis. I am calling on Speaker Pelosi to reconvene Congress so we can roll up our sleeves and get back to work so we can pass a comprehensive energy plan to lower gas prices at the pump.”

Congressman Scalise debated last week to stay in session until a vote was brought up on the matter. Click here to view a clip of Scalise on the U.S. House floor. Last week Congress voted 213 to 212 to adjourn for a five week recess. Congressman Scalise voted against adjournment.

“Tonight I am hosting a Town Hall meeting to hear from my constituents about how the energy crisis is affecting their lives. I will take their common sense input back to Washington to share with my colleagues. In meetings I have already had in the district I am hearing the same thing my colleagues around the country are hearing. The American people want Congress to take action to address the nation’s energy crisis,” said Scalise.

Scalise’s Energy Town Hall meeting is scheduled for 7 pm on Wednesday, August 6 at the Mandeville City Hall. On Thursday Scalise will be returning to Washington D.C. calling on Congress to reconvene to vote on a comprehensive national energy policy.
