Scalise Congratulates Hammond’s Own High School Heisman Winner, Malia Cali
Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise congratulated Malia Cali of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Hammond for being awarded the prestigious 2009 Ladies High School Heisman for her excellence in athletics and academics. Cali was the sole female winner out of more than 55,000 applicants nationwide.
“This is a great honor for Malia Cali, and a proud moment for Louisiana,” Scalise said. “Cali’s achievements in the classroom, on the field, and throughout the community show what a role model she is for our state.”
Malia Cali, of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Hammond, La. is a three-year All State selection in track and field, cross-country and soccer, and ranks number one for academics in her senior class. In addition to lettering as a three-sport Varsity athlete, Malia is active in the St. Thomas Aquinas Academic Honor Society, is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and for two consecutive years, she has received the Joe Distefano Academic Scholarship.
The Wendy’s High School Heisman is awarded to one male and one female high school student athlete for excellence in academics, athletics and community service. This is the 16th year of the Wendy’s High School Heisman award.
