Scalise to IRS: Scrap Efforts to Stifle Free Speech

May 22, 2014

Washington, D.C. – Republican Study Committee Chairman Steve Scalise today called on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to abandon any attempt to stifle the First Amendment rights of non-profit organizations.

“Today’s announcement is an admission that the IRS’s targeting of civic organizations for the political beliefs of their members was wrong,” said Scalise. “The IRS should completely abandon any attempt to rewrite these longstanding rules instead of trying to find another way to harass American taxpayers.”

Earlier this year, Scalise, along with 80 members of the Republican Study Committee, submitted a public comment urging the IRS to abandon the proposed rule.
