Scalise: Louisiana Declared Emergency, Federal Funds Authorized

August 29, 2008

Metairie -- Congressman Steve Scalise today announced that President Bush issued an Emergency Declaration for Louisiana. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is authorized to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures.

“I commend President Bush and his administration for acting quickly and recognizing the severe threats we are facing in Louisiana,” Scalise said. “While we are praying for the best we need to prepare for the worst. My office is able to provide help to residents of the 1st Congressional District as families prepare for Gustav.”

Funding through FEMA is authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public heath and safety, or to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in the designated areas.

This emergency declaration assistance is for all 64 parishes in Louisiana. Additional designations may be made at a later date after further evaluation.
