Scalise statement on House funding of NIH

October 2, 2013

Washington, DC – Republican Study Committee Chairman Steve Scalise today issued the following statement after House Republicans voted to fund life saving cancer research and the National Institutes of Health.

“Today, I joined my House Republican colleagues in supporting funding for cutting-edge medical research and life-saving cancer treatment by voting to fully fund the National Institutes of Health,” Scalise said. “The United States is a world leader in biomedical research, and the NIH plays a vital role in allowing scientists and researchers to continue working to improve and save lives. Unfortunately, 170 House Democrats are so entrenched with Harry Reid and President Obama’s political games that they don’t understand why we would fund these initiatives, like cancer research for kids.

“The House continues passing bills to fund the essential parts of our government while also working towards a permanent solution to end Harry Reid's government shutdown. It’s time for the Senate Democrats and President Obama to stop playing games, stop holding cancer patients and others hostage, and finally come to the table to negotiate a solution.”
