Scalise Statement On Passage of NDAA

May 19, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC —House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) issued the following statement regarding the passage of NDAA:

“Providing for a strong national defense is the first responsibility of our federal government. The House has now passed critical legislation that will give our troops the resources they need to keep our country safe and secure. Specifically, this year’s National Defense Authorization Act gives our troops a much-deserved pay raise, helps improve the readiness gap, modernizes our military’s acquisition system, and blocks President Obama’s attempt to close Guantanamo Bay and bring those terrorists into the United States. In a dangerous world filled with enemies who are determined to do us harm, undermine our freedoms, and destroy our way of life, a strong national defense is the last place we can afford to come up short. I urge President Obama to stand up for our troops and drop his politically-charged veto threat on this bill that is critical to America’s national security. It is imperative that our troops who are sacrifice ping their lives for our freedoms have the assurance that their own government has their backs.”
