Scalise: Time for Obama to approve the Keystone XL Pipeline

May 23, 2013

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Steve Scalise today issued the following statement after the House passed H.R. 3, the Northern Route Approval Act, a bill to approve the Keystone XL Pipeline.

“The Keystone XL Pipeline means 20,000 American jobs immediately and increased energy security from the 830,000 barrels of oil a day we’ll get from Canada that we will no longer need to get from Middle Eastern countries who don't like us,” Scalise said. “For more than four years, President Obama has said no to the Keystone XL Pipeline, and by doing so he's also said no to American jobs and no to American energy security just so he can toe the line for radical environmental extremists in his party. It’s time for President Obama to stop playing politics and work with us to create jobs by approving the Keystone XL Pipeline today, which he can do with just one stroke of his pen. The bipartisan action we took today in the House is a vital step towards getting our economy back on track and creating 20,000 American jobs, and it’s long past time for President Obama to get off the sidelines and approve this project.”

“I applaud the House of Representatives’ approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. It will send a positive signal to Louisiana businesses encouraging them to continue to provide good, home-grown manufacturing jobs that will help our economy grow,” said Ed Scram President and COO Stupp Corporation. “The Keystone Pipeline will not only bring essential infrastructure to North American oil producers, but it will also provide jobs and an economic boost to America. Additionally, the ability for the United States to effectively utilize and capitalize on rich natural resources of the North American continent will continue our world leadership and move us toward energy independence. As a producer of steel pipe for the oil and gas industry, we are eager to see this project move forward.”

“The Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, representing the largest parish in the Greater New Orleans Region, supports the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline,” said Todd Murphy, President of the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce. “We applaud the House of Representatives for taking the initiative to encourage President Obama to create jobs. Energy is an important driver to this region’s economy and equally important to the nation’s supply of oil and gas. We support this and any measure that would strengthen our economy and create much needed jobs!”
