Trump to Scalise: “I’m Proud to Support the Replacement Plan”

March 7, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) joined several Deputy Whips this afternoon for a meeting with President Trump to discuss the House’s Obamacare replacement bill. Trump voiced his full support of the plan and encouraged House members to quickly provide relief for the American people.

President Trump, on the House’s plan to replace Obamacare:

“I'm proud to support the replacement plan, released by the House of Representatives and encouraged by members of both parties. I think really that we're going to have something that's going to be much more understood and much more popular than people can even imagine. It follows the guidelines I laid out in my congressional address -- a plan that will lower costs, expand choices, increase competition, and ensure healthcare access for all Americans.”

Rep. Scalise, on the plan:

“We've seen the dramatically skyrocketing costs. You're seeing double-digit increases every year in most part of the country in health premiums for families. Many families are seeing deductibles that rise about the $10,000 range, which means people don't have access to healthcare. People don't have the ability to choose their own doctor.

"This bill finally starts the process of not only repealing Obamacare, but also replacing it with reforms that put patients back in charge of their healthcare decisions, that lower costs for families. Let them actually choose the decisions between them and their doctor, which are so personal.”

Rep. Scalise's remarks:

“We’ve seen over the years the devastation that Obamacare has caused to families. Constituents that I hear from everyday tell me about skyrocketing premiums. One mother in my district told me about an $11,000 deductible that she has, that makes it almost impossible for her to utilize her healthcare. Unfortunately, we hear those stories all across the country. We’ve seen not only the devastation from higher costs, but also we’ve seen doctors leaving the healthcare marketplace, we’ve seen hospitals closing. We’ve seen limited access to healthcare because this law just doesn’t work for families.”
