House Democrats' Deceptive Health Care Bill Hurts Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement after House passage of H.R. 986:

CMS Administrator Seema Verma has been very clear: protections for preexisting conditions cannot be waived. H.R. 986 does not protect Americans with preexisting conditions; it is a bad bill with a misleading title. Where the Trump Administration sees an opportunity to help states lower premiums, stabilize enrollment, and increase choice for American citizens, Democrats only see an opportunity to play political games. Premiums across the country rose by 20% in both 2015 and 2016, but thanks to the Trump Administration’s efforts, including the fast-tracking of Section 1332 waiver approvals, premiums recently declined by 1.5%. If Democrats will not use their House majority to increase access to or delivery of care for Americans, the least they can do is not undermine the progress already being made by the Trump Administration. H.R. 986 is more than a bad messaging bill - it will restrict Americans’ access to stable markets and affordable coverage. Democrats should be ashamed of their votes today.
