Scalise Blasts Dems’ Proxy Voting Scheme

May 15, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement upon House passage of the Democrats' proxy voting scheme:

"Democrats have once again used this pandemic as cover for a power grab — this time, ramming through a partisan rule change that upends over 200 years of precedent with serious constitutional and institutional repercussions. Republican leaders laid out thoughtful plans to enable a safe return to work, but Democrats abandoned bipartisan discussions in favor of an untested plan that would allow just 20 Democrats to unilaterally pass legislation. This is outrageous. The constitution has not been suspended. All it would take for us to return to work, as we did today, is a little bit of common sense and safety precautions. Instead, Speaker Pelosi has chosen to shut down the people's House at the very moment when it is most important for us to lead by example and show the American people how to adapt to our new normal. Congress is essential now more than ever as over 30 million Americans are out of work and looking to us for help."
