Scalise, Louisiana Delegation Express Strong Support for LA Highway 1 DOT Grant Funding

February 21, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and the Louisiana Congressional Delegation wrote a letter to Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao expressing their strong support for the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant application for Louisiana Highway 1.

"LA 1 is the sole-access highway to America's busiest intermodal energy port, Port Fourchon. Ensuring access to the port, which services over 90 percent of our nation's offshore energy exploration and production, will directly support President Trump's larger plan for American energy dominance," writes the delegation in their February 21 letter to Secretary Chao.

"The INFRA grant, if awarded, combined with investments from the state of Louisiana, Port Fourchon, and private industry stakeholders will help ensure there is reliable access to Port Fourchon and will enhance our nation's energy security."

"This is a top priority for our delegation, and we appreciate your thoughtful consideration of Louisiana's application."

Background:

In January, Whip Scalise hosted a meeting with Governor John Bel Edwards, Louisiana officials, and top Trump Administration officials regarding federal funding for elevating LA Highway 1.

Whip Scalise also met with Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to discuss Louisiana's application of the federal INFRA grant.

The LA 1 Improvement project includes four phases to elevate and improve highway infrastructure from U.S. Highway 90 at Mathews, La. to Port Fourchon/Grand Isle. The state will be seeking federal funding to build 8.3 miles of elevated highway from Golden Meadow to Leeville, LA.
