Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) released the following statement after Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 257 was held on Wednesday. The lease sale was rescheduled after a federal judge struck down President Biden's illegal ban on new oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters in June.

Wednesday's lease sale resulted in $191.6 million in high bids from 33 companies in the Gulf of Mexico.

“Today’s oil and gas lease sale proves there is strong interest and vast potential for continued offshore exploration and development in the Gulf of Mexico. I’m happy to see today’s lease sale held after we successfully blocked the Biden Administration’s attempt to ban leasing in federal court. This lease sale will bring critical dollars to Louisiana for coastal restoration and hurricane protection, and I will keep pushing the Biden Administration to hold further lease sales in the Gulf and expand American energy production so we can lower gas prices at the pump and create more energy jobs here at home, which will greatly benefit our state and the nation,” said Republican Whip Steve Scalise.
