November 21, 2008

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today congratulated the Louisiana Medical Center and Heart Hospital of Lacombe and Ochsner Medical Center of New Orleans for being named to the 2008 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals. The Top Hospitals program recognizes the highest performing hospitals that provide cardiovascular care.

“Not only is this a great honor for these two hospitals, it is a great benefit to the quality of life in our communities to have Ochsner Medical Center and the Louisiana Medical Center and Heart Hospital of Lacombe named as top 100 cardiovascular hospitals in the nation,” Scalise said. “This is another great asset we can use to sell our region as a great place to live and work.”

The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals study scores hospitals in key performance areas including: risk-adjusted medical mortality, risk-adjusted surgical mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures score, percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, procedure volume, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage-and severity-adjusted average cost.

The hospitals demonstrated higher performance on the evidence-based core measures published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and cost $1,542 less per case, on average.
