Scalise introduces amendment to CR that sacks the czars

February 15, 2011

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today introduced an amendment to the Continuing Resolution designed to defund many of President Obama’s czars. The Continuing Resolution would fund the government through September and would cut $100 billion in government spending.

“The dramatic increase in czars by this administration is a dangerous and growing trend, and my amendment to start defunding President Obama’s czars will fully reverse this reckless practice,” Scalise said. “Hardworking American taxpayers should not be forced to pay for a shadow government run by radical czars who circumvented the accountability and transparency called for in the Constitution through Senate confirmation. It’s time we start sacking these czars, and I look forward to the passage and inclusion of this amendment into the upcoming CR.”

The Continuing Resolution will be debated throughout the week in the House of Representatives. In January, Scalise re-introduced the Sunset All Czars Act, H.R. 59, which requires Senate confirmation of czars holding similar authority and power as cabinet officials but who have not undergone the same confirmation process. The Sunset All Czars Act has 39 cosponsors.
