Scalise on The Mike Gallagher Show: Cutting taxes for middle-class is 'what we ran on'

November 8, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C.—House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined The Mike Gallagher Show this morning to discuss the House's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which will result in the creation of nearly one million jobs over ten years and give the average American middle-class family a $2,598 tax cut.

On the need to pass common-sense tax reform…

"We’ve got to get (tax reform) done. Failure is not an option. That’s been my approach from the beginning…Our tax cutting/jobs bill is what this economy needs. Families want to see more money in their pockets. They’re going to, under our bill, have more of their hard-earned money saved in their pockets by lower tax rates.

“When we see these companies moving jobs overseas, it‘s because we have the highest tax rate in the industrialized world. It’s killing jobs, and it’s killing our middle class. Let’s bring those jobs back. People get that a lower corporate tax rate allows us to be competitive again and bring those jobs back to America and ultimately help give them higher wages. That’s what our bill does; it’s why we need to get it done. President Trump is all in on doing this because he knows when you push middle-class tax cuts, the jobs it’s going to create the economic growth we are going to have to reduce our deficit. That’s what he ran on. That’s what we ran on. Let’s go get it done.”

On working to build a coalition of support for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act…

“My job as the Majority Whip is to build the coalitions. I mean, you can be frustrated because you watch this, but I need to make sure we have the votes to pass this bill. The Speaker is all in it, President Trump is all in it—helping us in so many ways, Kevin Brady, the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, they are meeting now as we speak and they are battling Democrats who don’t want tax cuts for middle-class families. That’s the important thing to look at, we’re are fighting for middle-class tax cuts, the Democrats are trying to block it, and so we’re going to get this done, we’re going to keep working until we pass this bill.”
