Scalise: More Than $16 Million in Grants and Disaster Expense Reimbursements for Jefferson Parish

January 6, 2010

Metairie -- Congressman Steve Scalise today announced a total of $16,469,569 in Federal grants and Project Worksheet (PW) reimbursements for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Jefferson Parish Public School System, and the City of Gretna.

“Hurricane recovery continues to be one of my top priorities. It is critical to our recovery that FEMA clears its backlog of project worksheets,” Scalise said. “This funding will help ensure that our law enforcement agencies are able to fully recover from past storms so they can continue protecting our families as well as dealing with hurricane evacuation and recovery in the future. I will continue working to break through FEMA’s bureaucratic red tape and reform the way FEMA operates.”

Details of the Federal grant and the two Project Worksheets are below.

• $5,286,059 has been provided for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office as a Project Worksheet reimbursement for the cost of emergency protective measures throughout the entire parish before, during and immediately following Hurricane Gustav.

• $9,131,581 has been provided for the Jefferson Parish Public School System as a Project Worksheet reimbursement to refund the cost of rebuilding the Grand Isle School Buildings which flooded during Hurricane Katrina.

• $2,051,929 will be awarded to the City of Gretna through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to modify the current Gretna Police Department Headquarters and minimize the potential for damages from flooding, high winds and other hazards associated with strong hurricanes.
