Scalise: NFIP Extension Passes House
Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today issued the following statement after a one year extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) passed the U.S. House of Representatives.
“This extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is vital to residents throughout the Gulf Coast, especially since we’re in the peak of hurricane season,” Scalise said. “Louisiana homeowners should not be left in limbo while Congress recklessly allows the program to expire over and over. While this extension is welcome news to the citizens of Louisiana, we must continue to pursue a series of reforms to the program to improve the financial solvency of NFIP and also to better suit the needs of the people along the Gulf Coast.”
In July, the House passed H.R. 5114 to extend the NFIP for five years and increase maximum coverage limits to $335,000 for residences, $135,000 for residential contents, and $670,000 for nonresidential properties. This bill is currently being debated in the Senate, and the one year extension passed today will prevent the program from expiring in the interim.
