Scalise: NFIP Extension Passes House
Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today voted in favor of H.R. 5114, a five year extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which passed the House 329 to 90.
“The passage of a long-term extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was especially important since we’re in the middle of hurricane season,” Scalise said. “Louisiana homeowners should not be left in limbo while Congress recklessly allows the program to expire over and over. This extension is welcome news to the citizens of Louisiana, especially those who have been prevented from buying houses because of the failure of Congress to adequately extend the program. In addition to extending the NFIP until 2015, the bill increases coverage limits for residential and non-residential properties, giving Louisiana residents the peace of mind they deserve.”
H.R. 5114 increases maximum coverage limits to $335,000 for residences, $135,000 for residential contents, and $670,000 for nonresidential properties. In addition, the bill directs NFIP to develop a plan to repay the program’s existing debt and delays the mandatory flood insurance purchase requirement for areas newly designated Special Flood Hazard Areas for five years.
Scalise is also the lead Republican sponsor of H.R. 1264, the Multiple Peril Insurance Act of 2009, which would make additional reforms to the NFIP to include multiple peril insurance coverage.
