Scalise: Oil Spill Commission Findings “Disturbing”
Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today issued the following statement after the National Oil Spill Commission announced that BP and Halliburton received information weeks before the Deepwater Horizon disaster indicating that the cement used to seal the Deepwater Horizon well was unstable.
“These findings from the Oil Spill Commission are disturbing, but confirm our claims from months ago that corners were cut on safety,” Scalise said. “The fact that BP and Halliburton received information indicating that the cement was unreliable yet still proceeded, further underscores the need for both companies to be held fully responsible. The most tragic part of this finding is that it was an avoidable disaster- those 11 lives should not have been lost and our Gulf Coast wetlands and ecosystems should not have had to endure months of inundation by the oil. I will continue to push to hold these companies accountable for this devastating disaster.”
