Scalise Plays in Longest Yard Football Classic for Charity

October 28, 2009

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise played in the 2009 Longest Yard Football Classic to raise money for the Capitol Police Memorial Fund and the Washington Literacy Council. The game raised almost $60,000 this year.

The “Mean Machine” team, comprised of a bi-partisan group of Members of Congress and former NFL players, beat the Capitol Police “Guards” team 32-26 in overtime last night at the Army National Guard Armory in Washington, D.C. This was the first victory for the “Mean Machine” since the game was founded in 2005.

The Capitol Police Memorial Fund was created by Congress for the families of Capitol police officers who have been killed in the line of duty. In 1998 Officers Jacob Chestnut and John Gibson were shot and killed. The fund was originally set up to help support the children and families of the fallen officers, but as the children have grown, the U.S. Capitol Police decided to include the Washington Literacy Council as a beneficiary of the game.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell attended the game. Scalise spoke to him briefly about the New Orleans Super Bowl in 2013 and Goodell congratulated Scalise on the Saints 6-0 start!
