Scalise Presents Alternative Solutions to President Obama

January 29, 2010

Baltimore, MD -- Congressman Steve Scalise today attended a meeting with President Barack Obama and U.S. House Republicans. Scalise spoke with the President and presented him with summaries of two of his bills: the GAS Act, H.R. 1108, and the CAP the DEBT Act, H.R. 4262 (which has more than 80 co-sponsors). During the meeting, House Republicans brought up issues like job creation, health care, the growing federal deficit, and wasteful Washington spending.

“I presented President Obama with bills I've filed to fund coastal restoration projects, and to cap the debt ceiling so we can balance the federal budget,” Scalise said. “The President agreed that coastal erosion is a problem, and said he would review my bills.”

Below is a summary of the bills Scalise gave the President today.

The Grow American Supply (GAS) Act, H.R. 1108

• Provide billions of new dollars to Louisiana and other coastal states by immediately sharing 50% of OCS oil and gas revenues with OCS adjacent states- these funds will allow Louisiana to immediately make major investments in restoring our vanishing coastline and protecting our valuable wetlands.
• Increases American supply of oil and natural gas by permanently opening the OCS where drilling is currently prohibited.
• Exploring alternative sources of energy like oil shale and tar sands.

The Control America’s Purse-strings to Deliver a Better Tomorrow (CAP the DEBT) Act, H.R. 4262

• Require a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate to authorize any increase in the U.S. national debt ceiling.
• Require a roll call vote on any proposal to raise the debt ceiling.
• Repeal the Gephardt Rule, which allows a debt ceiling increase to be included in a joint budget resolution without facing a direct vote.
