Scalise: Scrap the Government Takeover of Health Care and Work with Republicans

February 22, 2010

Metairie -- Congressman Steve Scalise made the following statement on President Obama’s health care proposal that was released this morning.

“If the President were sincere about good faith negotiations, he’d scrap the entire government takeover of health care and work with Republicans on our solutions to reduce costs, eliminate discrimination against pre-existing conditions, and pass common-sense medical liability reform without all the new taxes and new mandates. It is clear he has no intention to negotiate in good faith when his proposal is nearly identical to the House and Senate bills that were overwhelmingly rejected by the American people, and this “summit” will only create an excuse to try and blame Republicans for the failure of a government takeover of health care.”

Scalise has co-sponsored common-sense health care reforms like HR 3400, the Empowering Patients First Act that, address the problems that exist with health care without destroying the things that make our medical care the best in the world.

Scalise reached out to President Obama on several occasions to meet with him to review the comprehensive health care reforms he has proposed, specifically HR 3400, which has more than 50 co-sponsors including five Members of Congress who are medical doctors.
