Scalise: Unemployment tops 8 percent for the 43rd consecutive month

Sep 7, 2012 Issues: Taxes and Economy

Congressman Steve Scalise today released the following statement after the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics released a report showing an unemployment rate of 8.1 percent for August.  The unemployment rate has been above eight percent for 43 consecutive months.

“We cannot afford four more years of an Obama economy where millions of unemployed Americans and trillion dollar deficits are the new normal,” Scalise said.  “Hundreds of thousands of people stopped looking for jobs this past month, while families are paying higher costs at the grocery store and at the pump.  Higher costs, fewer jobs, and lower wages are the reality for future generations unless the Obama economy is quickly reversed.

“It’s time for real solutions to the economic pitfalls facing our county.  While the House of Representatives continues passing solutions to create American jobs and get our economy back on track, the White House and liberals running the Senate refuse to act on these common sense job-creation bills. The American people can’t wait and the country cannot afford a continuation of President Obama’s failed economic record.  It’s time for the Senate and the President to get off the sideline or get out of the way and allow us to restart America’s economic engine.”
