? House Republicans Get Results
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) issued the following statement after President Biden announced he would not veto House Republicans' resolution, H.J. Res. 26 – which would prevent the D.C. Council's misguided crime bill from going into effect – upon Senate passage.
“House Republicans are delivering results for hard-working families who deserve safety and security. With President Biden’s announcement that he will sign Rep. Andrew Clyde’s resolution to prevent the D.C. Council's disastrous get-out-of-jail-free laws from going into effect, he is admitting that the radical left’s ‘Defund the Police’ policies have resulted in skyrocketing crime destroying our cities. At a time when crime rages out of control in our nation’s capital, the D.C. Council’s changes to the criminal code would have eliminated mandatory minimum sentences for most violent crimes except first-degree murder, and reduced maximum penalties against dangerous criminals who are found guilty of carjackings, robberies, and burglary. With homicides up 37 percent, sex abuse up 146 percent, and motor vehicle theft up 111 percent compared to last year, Rep. Clyde’s resolution stops the D.C. Council’s soft-on-crime agenda in its tracks. House Republicans are delivering on our promises and sending a message to Democrat-run cities across the country that it’s time to put violent criminals in jail and keep our communities safe.”
