Scalise: Laken Riley Act on House Floor Today

March 7, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) appeared on Fox News’ Fox and Friends to discuss the House voting on the Laken Riley Act today to hold the Biden Administration accountable for threatening the safety of American communities. Leader Scalise emphasized that no family should have to go through what Laken Riley’s family has after her brutal murder at the hands of an illegal immigrant with a criminal record. Additionally, Leader Scalise highlighted how the state of our union has declined under President Biden’s leadership and Americans are fed up.

On Leader Scalise’s health:

“I'm feeling great. God answers prayers. I got the clean bill of health from my doctors about three weeks ago and came back to work and back, you know, doing my normal schedule. So, you know, in remission – very, very blessed.”

On the Laken Riley Act:

“Well, we're going to have a robust debate. I hope we have an overwhelming vote. But, Brian, one way or another, we're going to force everybody to take a side here. I mean, most Americans think it's crazy, number one, that we have wide open borders, letting people in illegally by the millions; let alone if someone here illegally is caught breaking our laws, they're literally let out the next day.

“You saw them beat up cops in New York, let out the next day. You saw what happened, you know, committing theft, let out. And then ultimately, the killer of Laken Riley was one of those people who was literally caught breaking laws and then let out of jail right away so that they could go and commit murder. And it's happening in every community in America. It's not isolated.

“We're naming this bill after Laken Riley because of the tragedy that happened there, but it should never happen anywhere. No family should have to go through what Laken Riley's family went through, yet, we're seeing it all too often because Joe Biden opened the southern border and he refuses to work with us to close it. But we're going to keep pushing this issue and fighting to get our border under control.”

On the Republican Party uniting around Donald Trump:

“You're seeing a coalescence around Donald Trump. You know, over the last few months, President Trump has built up a very, I think a real inspired movement, because people remember how good things were when Donald Trump was President: You know, we had a healthy economy. We had a secure and closed border. We had energy security.

“Our friends around the world, by the way, knew we had their backs and our enemies weren't running roughshod over our friends because they didn't know what might happen if they attacked us or our friends around the world. That's not the case today on any of those fronts, and I think there are a lot of people that have buyer’s remorse who voted for Joe Biden.

“So, you're seeing Donald Trump's coalition grow, not just Republicans. You're seeing Democrats, African-Americans, Hispanics. His numbers, President Trump’s, are growing in a lot of different places, and I think it's going to continue to grow until November because people are fed up with the direction under Joe Biden, but they also remember how good things were under Donald Trump. And we need to get our country back on track and nobody can do that better than Donald Trump.”
