As we recognize the 3-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, it is important to remember that being prepared is vital during this season. Tropical Storm Gustav is a serious threat to our region and weather trackers have predicted it could be in Southeast Louisiana by Monday morning.

The following is a list of ten tips I have compiled to help you prepare for the potential threat of Tropical Storm Gustav and tropical storms that may approach in the future.

Metairie -- Congressman Steve Scalise today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice is awarding $28,240 in federal grants to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office in Covington and the city of Kenner in Jefferson Parish for crime prevention initiatives.

Washington, DC -- U.S. Reps. Steve Scalise (R-Jefferson) and Charles Boustany (R-Lafayette) today released the schedule for the American Energy Tour: Part II. The Members of Congress will tour offshore oil and natural gas production facilities, receive briefings from the U.S. Minerals and Management Services (MMS) and look at the regions’ hurricane recovery progress.

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Rural Development is awarding a total of $1,810,000 in loans and grants to Franklinton and Amite. The funds will be awarded through the water and wastewater loans and grant program.

“I understand the value and critical need for funding to improve to improve water and wastewater systems in our districts rural communities,” Scalise said. “These projects will help improve the quality of life for the areas’ residents.”

Washington, DC -- U.S. Reps. Steve Scalise (R-Jefferson) and Charles Boustany (R-Lafayette) today announced that they will be leading a delegation of other Members of Congress from around the country on the American Energy Tour: Part II in New Orleans on August 25 - 26.

During the American Energy Tour: Part II, the Congressional delegation will visit an off-shore oil drilling facility and receive briefings from the Minerals Management Service (MMS) regarding offshore drilling and the leasing process.

As we approach the 3-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we are very appreciative for all of the help we’ve received from across the country. We have worked hard to repair the damage done by Katrina, and we have worked equally hard to reform a political system that was badly broken long before the storm. While much has been accomplished, there is still more work to be done as we rebuild from the nation’s worst natural disaster.
