Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today announced that Trista Kramer from St. Scholastica Academy in Covington won this year’s Congressional Art Competition. The theme for the competition was “Gulf Seafood: The Taste of Louisiana.” Trista’s winning piece is named “Crawfish time.”

Washington, DC -- During a meeting at the White House with House Republicans, Congressman Steve Scalise today asked President Barack Obama to resolve the lack of clarity in the approval process for offshore drilling permits and exploration plans. The President responded that he and his Director of the National Economic Council would work with Scalise to address the problem. Scalise has consistently advocated for the administration to remove roadblocks in the permitting process since the President imposed a moratorium on deepwater drilling.

The bill failed to pass the House of Representatives.

Washington, DC -- The Louisiana House Delegation today called on President Obama and the House Appropriations Committee to ensure adequate dredging of state rivers as well as increased protection to its levee systems in response to recent record flooding. Congressman Cedric Richmond (D-LA) led the letter to President Obama. Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) led the letter to the House Committee on Appropriations. The letters both request that the dredging of state rivers and the protection of the levee systems be included in any emergency supplemental appropriations bill.

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 1230, the Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act. The bill would expand American energy production and create jobs by requiring the Secretary of the Interior to conduct oil and natural gas lease sales that have been delayed by the Obama Administration.

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today issued the following statement after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released a comprehensive list of over-the-year change in unemployment rates for metropolitan areas across the country. The statistics compare March of 2010 with March of 2011 and highlight the impact of the offshore drilling moratorium on Louisiana’s economy and unemployment figures. Eight of the 11 areas with the largest increase in unemployment are Louisiana metropolitan areas.
